The regular football season of the Florida High School Athletic Association begins this week.

Here's the schedule for Volusia County teams. All games at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, however, some may change because of Hurricane Dorian.

Body-building competition

The Organization of Competition Bodies Southern Cross Southeast Showdown will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, 399 N. U.S.1, Ormond Beach.

Competition divisions are Women’s Bikini, Figure and Physique; and Men’s Physique, Classic Physique and Bodybuilding. Other divisions are Debut; Novice; Open; Masters 40, 50 and 60; and Wheel Chair. Classes may be added or combined depending on entries.

Weightlifting competition at Ocean Center

The Ocean Center will host more than 1,000 athletes in the USA Weightlifting American Open Series 3, a qualifier for the American Open Finals, Thursday, Sept. 12, at 101 N. Atlantic Ave.

Daytona Beach has a significant place in the history of weightlifting with the 1987 IWF World Championship for Women, the very first in the sport for women hosted at the Ocean Center that year. The area also is home to Spruce Creek High School, which has won the FHSAA Weightlifting Championship a record 33 times.

Free tennis

The Florida Tennis Center will host free Saturday morning tennis for elementary and middle school children Sept.14 through Oct. 19.

The games begin at 9:30 a.m. each Saturday and continue for about an hour.

Ice cream or snacks will be given to the kids after tennis.

Hospice annual 5K Run & Walk

Halifax Health-Hospice has rescheduled the 18th annual Hospice 5K Run & Walk because of the potential impact of Hurricane Dorian.

The race event will now be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and will start and finish near the Kenneth W. Parker Amphitheater, 2001 City Center Circle in Port Orange.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Hospice Family Caregiver Program.

Online pre-registration has been extended to Thursday, Nov. 7.

Packet pick-up and in-person registration will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Port Orange Care Center, 3800 Woodbriar Trail.

South Daytona 5K

The 21st annual South Daytona 5K Run will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at James Park, 1700 James St.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. at the Piggotte Community Center, 504 Big Tree Road. The cost is $25 through Sept. 11 and $30 after Sept. 11.

The 3.1 mile run benefits Atlantic High School’s STAR Program (Students Together For Autism Recognition).

There also will be a Fitness Festival from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. The festival will have local fitness centers, chiropractic care centers, massage therapists and healthy meal vendors.

Pebble Beach Prize offered at Children’s Golf Classic

The Children’s Museum Golf Classic has added a memorable prize to the its Hole-In-One contest -- a trip to Pebble Beach Resort.

The trip for two includes airfare and four days and three nights at The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay. Also, included are three rounds of golf per person plus $1,000 spending cash. Or, winner can select to receive the Classic’s other prize -- $10,000.

The Children’s Museum Golf Classic will be Thursday, Sept. 26, at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club in Ormond Beach.

The four-player team scramble will register at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $125 per person or $500 per foursome.

The Classic is presented by the Guild of the Museum of Arts & Sciences. Funds raised help support the Charles and Linda Williams Children’s Museum.

Tennis club meets

The Redneck Tennis Club for seniors 55 and older plays tennis at 7:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Detwiler Park, 701 Horton Ave., New Smyrna Beach.

New members welcome. Participants should bring racket and something to drink. All experience levels welcome. Free to play.

Family 5K and Fun Run

The sixth annual Southeast Volusia Family 5K and Fun Run/Walk will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Edgewater Connector of the Rails to Trails, 2200 Cow Creek Road.

The course will take participants along the Edgewater Connector. Entry fee is $27 or $35 day of race.

The event is part of the Live Your Life Well Race Series.
