Give them a job
In regards to the homeless situation, maybe a better idea would be to get the city to supply the shower and laundry trucks.
The city could hire them to clean up the streets and surrounding area. Don't give cash, but give them bags with sandwiches, cold water, snacks, toothbrush, toothpaste and soap. They can't work without an address, just saying.
State road atrocity
From Interstate 4 to Pioneer Trail, the eastbound right lane of State Road 44 has seriously deteriorated.
If I-4 was as bad, there would be screaming comments daily! The asphalt has worn away and has yet to be repaired. No road that young should be in such terrible shape.
The same goes for the stretch of the “slow” lane westbound from the light before the fairgrounds to I-4’s bridge. Shame on the state!
In response to: 'Offended Hitchhiker'
To the "Offended Hitchhiker," yes back in the '60s hitchhiking was pretty safe to do.
Now-a-days, in this world of ours, if you hitchhike or pick up a hitchhiker, you could end up lying in some ditch, dead.
So, yes, I am also one of those people who won't pick up anyone.
In response to: 'Too difficult to get license'
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, if you produce a valid U.S. Passport, additional paperwork, such as marriage license or divorce papers, are not necessary.
It would be nice if the license bureau employees would tell women there is a simple alternative to what they are now being told. Mr Rhodes needs to explain this to workers at all Florida License Bureau offices.
Higher taxes equal better services
People should educate themselves before making statements that are untrue.
Northern states have higher taxes because they pay better, they offer more to the people i.e, public transportation, better healthcare. Florida is 47th for teacher pay while the northern state I'm familiar with is 11th. Public transportation is minimal in Florida.
And even before expanding medicaid via ACA, you could go to any county health department and get primary care, well baby and mother, immunizations, dental and behavioral health on a sliding scale. No such services exist in Volusia County, which has the highest suicide rate in the state. And Florida is No.1 for new HIV cases.
Politics on the other hand is electing officials who disregard the entire electorate even their own party. Medical marijuana, voting rights, hands free driving.
We dog owners can do better
At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, six out of seven dogs were off leash (or running free with their leashes dragging) at the Smyrna Dunes Park.
We dog owners are able to play and swim with our dogs here because we promise to keep our dogs under control. Let’s encourage each other to do better.
The endangered birds are federally protected. Let’s give them some space so we can keep coming here to enjoy.
Thanks to a Hometown News article printed last December, I was able to apply for low-income homeowner energy assistance.
I had lost track of the office that moved from the motor vehicle office on Beach Street to the Volusia County Health Department due to hurricane damage.
Other low-income residences may need help now with high power bills due to excessive heat. Thank you Hometown News for being our information source.
Thanking church family
I would like to thank those who responded to “tired of beggars.”
How wonderful it was. God is our judge and he will judge us all, including me. We don't know what we go through in life or we're we will be. We all can lose our homes.
I had financial problems all of time because of struggling. I do have a home to live in, but if it wasn't for my church family, my great church family, they help me, and I appreciate their help.
God will take care of all of us no matter what. Jesus says I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you are struggling, ask Jesus to help you and he will. No matter how poor you are or where you live.
Shame on the one who made fun of the beggars. Pray for these people. I do. Thank you my church family again.
Better printing needed
I am calling about printed manner.
When they are printing in yellow and orange on a white background and printing in white on gray and beige background, people who are visually impaired cannot see that. I had a friend cancel a magazine because of printing.
Collection bin blues
The Sunoco station on Atlantic Avenue and Holland Road in Ormond Beach is an eyesore to the community.
They have allowed the dumping of discarded attire onto their property and allowed it to be strewn across A1A onto the dune walkover. The collection box on their property is not attended to and attracts transients that disperse the debris around our neighborhood.
I'm sure that the people dropping off the “donations” to charity have good intentions, but if they only knew where their drop-offs wind up, they would cease to be party to the trashing of our community.
Sunoco is partly to blame for allowing this activity to continue on their property. By allowing the collection bin on their property, they assume some responsibility for it's maintenance. I would like to suggest the removal of the bin and propose the well-intention people, that really want to help the needy, take their discards to a church or other charitable organization for proper distribution to those who could use it.
Wants the Edgewater marina
I look forward to going to the new marina and restaurant in Edgewater.
Edgewater needs a nice place on the water.
