School system will provide free meals for students
Volusia County Schools will provide free breakfast and lunch meals for its students (18 years old and younger) during the extended school closure period.
Meals will be available for pick-up between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the parent loop of each school site. The student or students must be present.
District staff will distribute the meals directly to those in their vehicles (drive-through service) upon arrival. Also, district staff will hand-out meals directly to any walkers and/or bike riders that may lack motor-vehicle transportation. There will not be any public access to the school buildings during this time period.
East Volusia sites are:
•Tomoka and Osceola Elementary schools, Ormond Beach.
•Mainland High School, Campbell Middle and Hinson Middle schools; and Champion Elementary School in Daytona Beach
•South Daytona Elementary School
•Port Orange and Spruce Creek Elementary Schools in Port Orange
•Chisholm Elementary School in New Smyrna Beach
•Indian River Elementary School in Edgewater
West Volusia sites are:
•DeBary Elementary School
•Taylor Middle/High School in Pierson
•McInnis Elementary School in DeLeon Springs
•Citrus Grove, Freedom and Starke Elementary schools; Southwestern Middle School; and DeLand High School in DeLand.
•Volusia Pines Elementary School in Lake Helen
•Orange City Elementary School and River Springs Middle School in Orange City
•Spirit Elementary and Pride Elementary schools, and Deltona and Galaxy Middle schools, all in Deltona

Schools closed, state testing canceled
Volusia County Schools will be closed until April 15.
State testing has been canceled this spring. All extra-curricular activities are be suspended until further notice.
Preparations are in place for digital and remote learning for all schools. This at-home learning is expected to begin March 30.
The school district is still awaiting answers for assessments regarding accelerated courses. such as advanced placement, IB, AICE, and industry certifications.
The school district is awaiting guidance regarding special events such as prom and graduations.
Head Start survey
Mid Florida Community Services Inc. is in the process of gathering information for a community needs assessment that will inform the agency's Head Start program.
Community feedback is important. Sharing ideas and experiences will help Mid Florida identify children and families' needs and describe resources and services available to families.

Special virtual school board meeting
The Volusia County School Board will conduct a special virtual school board meeting at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 27.

Build a career with FAME
Local business leaders from Flagler and Volusia Counties have established Florida’s first Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) Chapter.
The program was developed by Toyota and serves to solve a local skills trade shortage while providing a pathway for people to earn a technical associate of science degree debt-free.
The FAME Sunshine Chapter has partnered with Daytona State College to provide the classroom and hands-on technical training in multiple manufacturing disciplines, including electronics, mechanical, hydraulics and automation.
AMT students will attend DSC two days per week for five straight semesters while working for a sponsoring business three days per week. This is an “earn while you learn” program and classes start next fall.

Applications available for scholarship
The DeLeon Springs Community Association Inc. has begun accepting applications for the 2020 DSCA Inc. Merit Scholarship.
The scholarship will go to a deserving high school student attending a secondary school in the DeLeon Springs area to further their education.
Applicants must be a resident of DeLeon Springs and accepted into an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational school.

ERAU responds to Covid-19 crisis
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will offer all classes online until at least the end of the spring 2020 semester.
Residence halls remain open to students only (no visitors). Limited dining services are also operational for students who choose to remain on campus, where stringent health protocols are in place.
Spring commencement ceremonies have been postponed. Commencement for those graduates will take place in December.
ERAU offers free online Courses for K-12 students
With schools closing across the country, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has ramped up free online course offerings on topics ranging from aeronautics and meteorology, to computer applications, history and more.
No-cost options are available for the general public as well as ERAU employees.
To enroll, students must have a 2.75 GPA. An unofficial transcript is required, but ERAU is prepared to expedite enrollment for children of employees across all campuses. Tuition waivers for Embry-Riddle employees are handled by Human Resources.

Free tax help at Stetson
Stetson University School of Business Administration will offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program on the DeLand campus.
From April 1 to 14, taxpayers with income below $56,000 may make an appointment to have a free, basic income tax return completed and filed electronically by trained student volunteers.
Tax return preparation days are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 1-3 p.m. Fridays at the Lynn Business Center, 345 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.
