Memorial Wreath

Ian Escalante, 15, of Port Orange carries the Navy's Wreath with Veteran Stan Saliga of New Smyrna Beach and escorted by Ret. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Richard Calabrese to the Veterans Memorial Monument during the Wreaths Across America ceremony at the Edgewater/New Smyrna Cemetery last December.

Local volunteers are working hard to ensure all veterans laid to rest are honored this December on National Wreaths Across America Day.

Ceremonies will be simultaneously conducted at noon Saturday, Dec. 15, across the country at more than 1,400 locations.

The goal is to place a live, balsam fir wreath at the headstone of every veteran and commemorate the ultimate sacrifice they made for our country.

“Every donation and wreath sponsorship is a meaningful gift from an appreciative supporter who knows what it means to serve and sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “We are so grateful to the Communities in Southeast Volusia for participating in our mission to 'Remember, Honor and Teach'.”

The wreaths will be brought to the Veterans Monument inside the north entrance of the Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery, 700 S. Ridgewood Ave., at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.

The wreaths will be escorted by the Edgewater Police and Fire Departments with an honor guard of veterans on motorcycles from the Patriot Guard Riders and various other veterans organizations.

Hundreds of wreaths will be placed. Refreshments from many area restaurants have been donated for after the ceremony.

Ceremonies at noon Saturday also will be at:

•Volusia Memorial Park, 550 N. Nova Road, Ormond Beach

•Deltona Memorial Gardens, 1295 Saxon Blvd., Orange City

•DeLand Memorial Gardens, 600 E. Beresford Ave., DeLand

National Wreaths Across America Day is a free event, open to everyone.
