DSC hosting public safety job fair

The School of Emergency Services at Daytona State College is hosting a public safety job fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Advanced Technology Campus, 1770 Technology Blvd., Daytona Beach.

It is open to all students and the public. There also will be a display of firetrucks, police vehicles, specialty tactical vehicles and boats.

More than 65 police, fire and emergency medical agency recruiters are expected.

Attendees should dress professionally, bring résumés and be prepared to speak directly to recruiters. Average starting salaries are $38,000 - $48,000 per year, not including benefits.

NASCAR now owns races and tracks

NASCAR reported it has completed buying International Speedway Corp. in a deal that was valued at about $2 billion.

The race-sanctioning body now owns 16 of the tracks where the races run. The new company will remain based in Daytona Beach and will continue as NASCAR. As part of this process, ISC has been delisted from NASDAQ, the company reported.

Jim France will serve as chairman and CEO with Lesa France Kennedy as executive vice chair. Steve Phelps was appointed president and will oversee all operations of the merged entity.

Tourist Development Council to meet

Volusia County’s Tourist Development Council will meet at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in meeting room 103 of the Ocean Center, 101 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach.

The meeting is open to the public and there will be time for participation.

The advisory group makes recommendations to the Volusia County Council regarding use of tourist development tax revenues and the effective operation of special projects.

New 7-Eleven opening

A new 7-Eleven store will host a grand-opening celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct.25, at 1401 Beville Road, Daytona Beach.

Franchisee owner is Dave Singh.

There will be fresh food sampling, free coffee and Big Gulp drinks, and $1 Big Bite hot dogs and pizza slices.

Attorney awarded ratings

Attorney Erum Kistemaker has been awarded two “AV” ratings from the Martindale-Hubbell rating system, an independent service.

She has received the highest possible rating in 2019 for legal ability and ethical standards.

Halifax hires oncology rehabilitation navigator

Dr. Ashley Perry, has been named oncology rehabilitation navigator for Halifax Health-Brooks Rehabilitation Center for Outpatient Rehabilitation.

A new concept in cancer rehabilitation, Dr. Perry is the only oncology rehabilitation navigator in Volusia County.

An oncology rehabilitation navigator is a rehabilitation professional with expertise in detecting, mitigating and treating functional decline of cancer patients.

Dr. Perry has nearly a decade of experience as a physical therapist, having worked in a variety of settings, ranging from skilled nursing facilities caring for an aging population to high-level sports clinics.

A graduate of the University of Florida, she previously worked as a social worker with abused children for five years before returning to college and earning a doctor of physical therapy degree from the University of St. Augustine. She also completed a postdoctoral residency specializing in orthopedics and achieved Manual Therapy Certification.

Wawa opens 200th Florida store

Wawa Inc. announced it opened its 200th Florida store in Naples Thursday, Oct. 17.

The milestone comes a little more than seven years after Wawa launched in the Florida market, ahead of initial projections.

Opening the same day were Wawas in Nokomis and Ormond Beach. Wawa broke ground Oct. 15 in its newest market in Gainesville with three stores starting construction.

Wawa plans to continue to open an average of 20-30 stores per year with the goal of reaching 400 stores in Florida by 2028.

Also in Volusia County, Wawa recently opened a store in Deltona. It also has stores in Daytona Beach, Orange City, New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange. It has a store under construction in Daytona Beach, and one more each planned in DeLand and Daytona.
